Wait, what? No way. That would make me old. Ah...never mind. I’m old. You kids get off my lawn.

Doesn’t matter, you just have to yell YEEEAA-UH and DAYYYYY-UH at every pedestrian you pass.
It’s a law. If you break it they make you listen to Re-Load.

A Eighth gen civic
*Hipster glasses on*
The black album (while not the worst) started the downward spiral that leads to today. It showed them giving up on so many of their progressive elements for mass market appeal.

Sorry, I was a thrash metal radio DJ for a while...

I still have my ticket stub from seeing them on that tour.
(And from seeing Megadeth - STP opened for them, and seeing Batman??? back in the day)

Just like Nirvana's Nevermind, it took a band that was previously a little more fringe and innovative and made them overproduced and radio-friendly. I still call this a net win, though — if not for Black Album (I was 12), I never would have gone back to their older stuff, or Black Sabbath, AC/DC, and all the other influential bands that preceded it.

Well, now I need to dig that album out and listen to it. Always makes me think of the junior high boys locker room. Our PE teacher always had the classic rock station on.

It’s in at least weekly rotation for me since I was about 5. Never gets old.

If Metallica Black was a rental car, it would be a Hertz Mustang convertible. It’s loud and fun, but nothing too innovative. You don't really get tired of it, but can't help but feeling some of the older Mustangs were really better, at least in the sense that they would kill you more easily.

It’s a shame I don’t have the ticket stub to the other show I caught at the Amigo Center (indoor soccer arena in South Tucson). I saw Pantera on the Vulgar Display tour there. That show (and pit) was insane .

I can’t even imagine. I’m fairly certain I would get myself killed at an early 90s Pantera show.

Jiminy Christmas! I was 18 when that came out!

17/18 year old me was raised on local punk shows and metal bands that came through town. By that time I had broken my nose in a pit and had learned how to stay away from the guys with blades and spikes and how to survive getting thrown off balance.
I’m still not entirely clear how I transitioned from that guy to the goth industrial kid who wore skirts and mesh shirts within approximately the same time frame.
Though I will definitely say that knowing that you can survive a Pantera / Alice In Chains / Megadeth / Fugazi / Crash Worship / NIN pit makes walking 6 miles to home at 4 AM in a skirt a bit easier. I really believed I could take care of myself. (I guess 4 AM, + 6'1" + long hair + energetic pace + clearly in great shape + skirt + walking with absolute confidence made me just enough of a “???” for people not to mess with me).

Somewhere, I’ve got my New Years’ Day 2000 ticket stub from Metallica/Kid Rock (ugh)/Sevendust. I’ve lost my ticket stub from 1994 Metallica/Danzig/Suicidal Tendencies.
Last album I bought was Garage, Inc. Of the primary studio albums, I never bought anything after Justice.
Never saw Megadeth with anyone, but I did see Pantera open for Black Sabbath on the reunion tour. We went to that show just late enough to miss Limp Bizkit.

I am fully prepared for this
as soon as I get my Metallica playlist going.
By the way, I heard the live show in Minneapolis is being streamed on Pandora. First rock show in the new Vikings stadium.

And I totally get that, Enter Sandman was probably my first exposure to the band (as I expect is true with many on here), but I didn’t really get the hype until I heard ...And Justice for All. I mean first times I heard Blackened and One, it totally blew my mind. Nothing on black really did that for me, it’s great music but there’s not all that much going on beneath the surface. Then again, I came in from the punk side so the relatively raw and unpolished nature (not to mention the super nihilistic lyrics) of the early stuff was right up my alley.

Me too, though Death Magnetic showed some promise, it was totally fucked in the mastering room my the loudness wars.
I was actually one of the early guys who released a custom master based on the GH raw tracks.
Edit, this shit right here, ruined an otherwise decent album >:(

You're not wrong. Although I was 11 when it came out, so I wasn't terribly versed in their prior works at that point. The black album was actually one of the first metal albums I listened to. That and Nirvana basically lead to the divergence of simply listening to whatever my parents were.

I was the drummer in the local shows in HS so I could watch the pit from the safety of my kit.

So I didn’t get into metal until way later, punk was more my speed. It was actually this that got me into metal and actually made me seek out their old stuff!
